which Google API key is needed for the plugin?

Hi Andrea, first of all, congratulations with your new plugin!
Google has a lot of API’s related to geolocation, which Google API key is needed for the plugin?
Regards
Carsten

I will jump on this bandwagon too. Andrea, thanks for creating this plugin.
It doesn’t work for me with the regular Maps API, I’m getting an error saying
“BP Profile Search: don’t know how to display the distance field type.”
So maybe wrong API. But to get Places API you need to add billing info to Google so they can charge you if you go over the limit.

Carsten,
Good question! I just forgot to add a link to the relevant Google page, I’m going to find it and add it today. Thank you for reporting.
darunia77,
The error you get means you are using an older template.
Could you please copy and paste your form template description – the green, blue or red string and the following lines? You can find it in your Edit Form page.
Added the info to get the Google API key under the Installation tab.
A recent tutorial on this topic is:
Generate And Setup Google Maps API Keys
courtesy of GEO my WordPress.
Hi again, I have set up the API, and the plugin is working fine.
One question. To geolocate other members, requires that they first manually enter their position in their profile in order to be listed?
What happens when a member change position, does he have to enter that new location, or will the geolocation change as well?
Regards
CarstenHello Carsten,
You are correct, only members who populate their Google Place Autocomplete field can be found by the search by distance.
On the other hand, even members who didn’t populate their Google Place Autocomplete field are able to search for other members who did.
When members change their location, they should remember to edit their Google Place Autocomplete field.
Hi Andrea,
Thanks so much for creating this plugin!
i’ve run into the same issue as darunia77. i get the error message: “BP Profile Search: don’t know how to display the distance field type” on the search page.
The API key works and i’ve managed to update a user profile with an autocompleted address.
i’ve created a new form with the autocompleted address field as the only search option.
The form uses the following template:
members/bps-form-legacy
located in: themes/kleo/buddypress/Any help would be appreciated.
Thanks!
john
Hi Andrea,
Quick update.
i changed my theme from Kleo to 2019 and the error went away.
Switching back to Kleo and the error re-appears.
Thanks!
john
Hello John,
Your Kleo theme provides custom form templates, and these templates aren’t aware of the search by distance recently released.
I’m going to contact the Kleo team to explain this issue, so they will be able to upgrade their templates and support the new features.
Hey Andrea,
Thanks so much for the quick reply!
i figured it might be something like that. i’ll keep an eye out for an update.
Much appreciated!
john
Hi John,
I’ve written a post about this issue, see:
https://dontdream.it/new-form-template-structure/
and I’ve sent an email to [email protected] to alert the Kleo team.
I’ll keep you informed of any new developments.
Andrea
