    Hi there

I’ve been having some issues with a WordPress site that I host. The person who manages it go in touch to ask for my help. It’s using the theme Twenty Fourteen and they use the traditional method for adding and removing pages from the menu (appearance>menus). When we try to add a page we get the small processing circle moving for a long time and then times out, but with no page added. When we try to remove a page from the menu and then click “Save Menu” it goes to a blank white screen and doesn’t make the change.

Similarly when doing bulk actions with plugins we get the same white screen.

When I look at the Users on the site, there are other Administrators that are phantom ones, when I try to remove them and confirm the deletion, again I get the white screen. The phantom accounts are still then listed after I go back to the Users section.

When I go to Add New Theme I get the following message “An unexpected error occurred. Something may be wrong with ww.wp.xz.cn or this server’s configuration.” and no option to install any new themes – they just don’t show up.

    Things I’ve tried…

    • Activating a different theme and making the changes.
    • Deactivating all the plugins both manually and via FTP.
    • Uploading the wp-admin, wp-includes and all the root files again via FTP.
    • Changing the permissions of all directories to 755 and files to 644.

Unfortunately none of the above have been able to solve the issues I’m facing.

Hopefully someone with more knowledge is able to offer some help to get past this.

    TIA

  • Hello!

Thank you for posting on the official WordPress forums.
It looks like your problem is due to the resources of your hosting plan. You can try increasing the PHP settings: https://wp-staging.com/increase-php-max-input-vars-limit-in-wordpress/

    Thank you.

The reason for the error should be visible in the error log. You can find it in your hosting area. If necessary, the support of your hosting can help you.

Alternatively, you could also enable debugging in WordPress. How to do this is described here: https://ww.wp.xz.cn/support/article/debugging-in-wordpress/ – also here the support of your hosting can help you if necessary to edit the file accordingly.

In both cases you should be able to see what the cause is in the logfile.

    Hi all.

Thanks for your replies. I’ve managed to solve it. I deleted the root filed, wp-admin and wp-includes and then did a fresh upload and everything seems to be working properly again.

    Thanks

    Colin
