White screen after Install

    I tried installing your latest of EE and it crashed my system with the white screen. I tried suggestions on EE troubleshooting and still had the same results. I was able to install 4.9.10 however I received this error message; An error has occurred:
    2016-10-25 00:47:24
    Warning: Unexpected character in input: ‘\’ (ASCII=92) state=1 in /home7/justasua/public_html/chrysanthi/wp-content/plugins/event-espresso-decaf/core/helpers/EEH_Debug_Tools.helper.php on line 486

    I received this error along with another one when trying to install EE 4.9.16. Help please.

    Your server needs to be upgraded to at least PHP5.3 to be able to run EE4. Your host will probably be glad to make the upgrade if you ask.

    I read that suggestion while googling the problem so I upgraded PHP to 5.6. Still same result.

    Did your host reboot the server after PHP was upgraded? Are you able to check the PHP error logs to find the actual fatal error that was thrown? A PHP Warning will not cause a site to go down, but a Fatal Error will.

    Yes, and checked to make sure I was running php 5.6. I just checked the error logs this is what it says;

    PHP Warning: Unexpected character in input: ‘\’ (ASCII=92) state=1 in …./wp-content/plugins/event-espresso-decaf/core/helpers/EEH_Debug_Tools.helper.php on line 486

    PHP Parse error: syntax error, unexpected T_STRING in …/wp-content/plugins/event-espresso-decaf/core/EE_Load_Espresso_Core.core.php on line 80

    That last error could only happen if the site is running PHP 5.2 or lower. Can you install the Health Check plugin and find out what it says?

    I just activated and this time I didn’t get any information. It’s just activated but no report. Before after activation it gave me a report.

    You’ll find the Health Check Report at Dashboard > Health Check.

    I can’t really help you there, that’s a great plugin and usually just works, but it seems something fishy is going on with your webserver. Your server admin/host support tech will be able to help.

    No problem, for now i’m using 4.9.10 and i’m a little afraid of updating until i get a good backup. Thanks for your help.
