I have 4 blogs. I successfully updated two of them to the latest version of WP. The other two use different themes (more advanced themes) and I was treated to the white screen in trying to update them yesterday. I have renamed the plugins folder, eliminated white space from certain files as recommended in other forums and increased the php memory on the server side. To no avail. I have renamed the theme directory in an attempt to force the usage of the default theme with the result that I then get the white screen instead of the blog home page. Is there another way to force WP to use the default theme? Or any other ideas?

Thanks so much for any feedback!

    Try:
    – switching to the Twenty Eleven theme by renaming your current theme’s folder inside wp-content/themes and adding “-old” to the end of the folder name using FTP or whatever file management application your host provides.

resetting the plugins folder by FTP or phpMyAdmin.

    – re-uploading all files & folders – except the wp-content folder – from a fresh download of WordPress.

    – running the upgrade manually via wp-admin/upgrade.php

I have renamed the theme directory

Did you rename your current theme folder or the folder “themes” with all the themes in it?

You need to rename your current theme folder to force the use of the default theme.

I renamed the current theme folder but it did not force the use of the default theme.

Re-upload a fresh, unpacked, copy of the Twenty Eleven folder to wp-content/themes using FTP or whatever file management application your host provides.

I can see your site, but the wp-admin is somehow redirected to:
    http://yourcatisacriminal.croatiatraveller.com/wp-admin/

    Can you login here: http://yourcatisacriminal.com/wp-login.php

    Also try:
    – renaming or deleting the .htaccess file by using FTP or whatever file management application your host provides. If you delete it make a backup first.

No I can’t login there. I have the site listed as a subdomain but that’s always been the case and this is a very recent problem. My hosting co suggested I eliminate it from the list of subdomains. I’m going to try uploading a new copy of the Twenty Eleven folder as well and see if that works.

Well, the new copy of Twenty Eleven doesn’t work. As soon as I rename the Atahualpa theme I again get the white screen on the home page.

    Renaming htaccess also didn’t work.

Have you tried the other thing esmi suggested:

    – re-uploading all files & folders – except the wp-content folder – from a fresh download of WordPress.

This is what I’m doing right now. Lotta work for a hobby site, not even my business site. I’ll let you know how it works out. If not, will have to shoot self and cats.

Thanks to all and for answering so promptly. Yes it did work out. I hope I don’t ever have to do this again.

I’m glad you got it resolved!
