Why multiple sitemap files

    For some reason, my main sitemap.xml file contains a list of other xml sitemap files which contain my posts by month

    e.g. in sitemap.xml I have

    sitemap-pt-post-2014-07.xml
    sitemap-pt-post-2014-06.xml

    Which contain the posts for July and June this year respectively.

    As I understood it, I would only have one sitemap XML file listing all posts for the site?
