See if it speeds up if you delete what is in your admin panel Options, Writing, Update Services box.

1. Go to your admin login. If you don’t know where that is please provide a link to your site.
2. login
3. Click on Options
4. Click on Writing
5. In Update Services delete what’s in the box.

I too am having this problem. It has just appeared about two to three weeks ago. I have deleted the pingomatic as you suggested, but still no luck. It even takes about 1 minute to login to the system before the admin pages come up.
I have optimized my db, read the forums, searched google, spoke to my host and still the same issue. I am running 2.2.1 with PHP 5.1.6, MySQL 5.0.27 standard, and Apache 1.3.37.
Any help you can provide would be mostly appreciated.
