widget missing

Using wordpress 4.5.3 multi-site enabled, and buddypress installed with several other plugins.
Do not see the widget available in the widgets screen backend for the sub blogs, when logged in as site super – admin.. Is this the same for everyone else right now?
Installed a similar plugin ( https://ww.wp.xz.cn/plugins/author-avatars/ ) – and it does have a widget show up in the widgets backend for each sub blog – so I think it’s an issue with this plugin at the moment (?) – or something in my over modded setup perhaps.
