Is there any data on how this works on sites with CDN enabled?
I use CloudFlare.

It seems Cloudflare automatically optimizes images via their Polish service: https://developers.cloudflare.com/images/polish/

However, this is not free. So if you don’t have it, then it seems using the plugin would be beneficial.
