    Hello wordpress community,

I’m currently facing a tracking issue in woocommerce. Many of the orders source/origin showing as “Unknown” which is difficult to identify where the order is exactly coming from. Previously, the frequency of unknown orders was very low but suddenly many of the orders are showing as unknown source. How to fix the tracking?

  • Hi @zohairesire,

Thank you for getting in touch. To help me understand the issue better, could you please confirm which platform you’re using to track your WooCommerce sales?

    Hi Moses M.

I’m not using any platform for tracking as this is the built-in feature of woocommerce and it gave source of order by itself.

    Hi @zohairesire,

I understand how important it is for you to know where your orders are coming from, as this helps you track conversions and understand customer behavior better. Let’s check a few things together to get this resolved. Could you please confirm when you started noticing that many of your orders show “Unknown” as their source? Was it after a recent WooCommerce or plugin update? Also, do all orders now show as “Unknown,” or are there still some that correctly display the source? This will help us determine whether the issue is affecting all tracking data or just specific cases.

It’s also important to confirm that order attribution tracking is enabled on your store, as this feature allows WooCommerce to record where an order originated. You can review this guide for details on how it works and how to confirm it’s enabled: https://woocommerce.com/document/order-attribution-tracking/#section-2

In addition, please check the following:

    1. Ensure you’re using the latest version of WooCommerce and any analytics or tracking plugins.
    2. If you use caching or optimization tools (like WP Rocket, LiteSpeed Cache, or Cloudflare), make sure that your Cart and Checkout pages are excluded from caching.
    3. If you use UTM parameters or custom tracking, ensure your URLs preserve query strings to pass referrer data correctly.

Once you share when this started and whether it affects all orders, I can help you take the next troubleshooting steps or test for plugin conflicts. Let’s see how it goes!

Thank you for your detailed response. Yes, most of the orders source are shown but few orders like maybe 10% of the orders source are showing as unknown while previously there were hardly any orders whose source was showing as unknown. Yes we do use WP rocket plugin.

    Hi there!

    Thank you for the update.
Generally, the origin appears as “Unknown” when the order is created manually, or when the order meta data is deleted or not saved properly in the database.

To assist you further, could you please confirm whether these orders were created manually, or were they placed directly through the checkout?

If they were placed through the checkout, could you please check if there is anything common among those orders, such as the products purchased or the payment method used?
Also, please let us know which payment method was used for these orders.

Since you are using the WP Rocket plugin, please make sure the cart and checkout pages are excluded from the cache, then test again to see if the issue continues.

Lastly, please share your System Status Report from WooCommerce > Status.
You can paste it using https://pastebin.com/ or https://gist.github.com/ and share the link here.

Once we have more details, we’ll be able to help you further.
