Lately I’ve been getting some failed payments with WooPayments. Looking into the logs I see this error: payment_intent_authentication_failure.

I checked all other logs that seemed relevant and didn’t find any more information regarding this error or any other error that could be related. I’ve tried it many times with several of my own cards and it always works. So I’m wondering what it could be, that’s triggering this error sometimes. Just wanna make sure that it’s not a problem on my site.

Any ideas are appreciated. Thank you
    Tobias

  • Hi @saib0t,

Thank you for reaching out. I understand how worrying it can be to encounter errors like this. To help us look into it more closely, could you please provide more context on where you’re seeing these errors? For example, are they appearing in the admin dashboard, order details, or within the logs?

Also, are these errors affecting how orders are processed — such as preventing them from being marked as completed? If so, is it happening with just one order or multiple? And do those orders share anything in common, like being from guest checkouts, returning customers, or using the same payment method?

    Hi @mosesmedh,

so I noticed those errors, when I saw failed orders in my dashboard. I then looked into the woopayments logs in Woocmmerce – Status – Logs.

The orders are not marked complete, if payment fails. They stay in the failed state. I’m looking at 2 cases now. In both cases I sent the customer a new checkout/payment link, but again it didn’t work with their credit cards.

I only see one commonality: Both were Debit Cards (one was Visa, one Mastercard). Other than that, one was guest, one was logged in…

    Hi @saib0t,

    Thanks for the details.

The payment_intent_authentication_failure An error typically means the cardholder didn’t complete the required authentication step (such as 3D Secure), or the authentication failed due to bank-side issues. Since it seems to happen with debit cards, it’s possible that their banks are declining the authentication, or the customers aren’t completing the verification prompts.

    Here are a few suggestions:

    • Ask the customers to try a different card or contact their bank for clarification.
    • Check WooCommerce > Payments > Settings > Advanced Settings to ensure Strong Customer Authentication (SCA) is enabled.
    • If you’re using custom checkout flows or third-party plugins, test with them disabled to rule out conflicts.
    • You can also check Stripe Dashboard > Developers > Logs for more detailed API responses tied to these failures.

Let us know if the issue continues or expands, we’re happy to dig deeper!

WooCommerce > Payments > Settings > Advanced Settings to ensure Strong Customer Authentication (SCA) is enabled.

I can’t find this in Woopayments. Is it only available with the Stripe integration?

I am using Funnelkit Checkout. But obviously it’s hard for me to test this with customers credti cards, as it is working with my own debit visa card.

I asked the customer though and she said, that apparantly 3D secure wasn’t triggered.

    Hi @saib0t,

Thanks for the update! It looks like @saivutukuru may have just mistyped that.

Since WooCommerce itself doesn’t include card payment options by default, and based on your message, it’s likely you’re using the WooPayments plugin for that. As this isn’t an issue with WooCommerce core, the best next step would be to reach out directly to the WooPayments support forum for assistance.

Let us know if you need anything else!

@mahfuzurwp yes, I’m using the official woopayments plugin. Thanks. I’m gonna reach out to them.
