• I have recently returned to WordPress after almost a decade! I am old fashioned and would prefer to design my pages using something more on the line of MS Word with its current style toolbar.

As it is, the current block editor is limited, and you need to drill down to find things. Indeed, this is my criticism of all the alternative page-builders/block editors I’ve found so far.

The best was Yellow Pencil, but is seemed flaky on my system and ‘not finished’.

Is there such an editor out there, does anyone know, please?

PS All I want to create is a blog with a decent choice of photo gallery plugins. I originally created sites using Dreamweaver if anyone remembers that!!

  • What limitations have you encountered with the block editor?

If you click “Options” (three dots symbol) in the top right of the block editor and tick “Top toolbar”, the block tools will be consolidated at the top of the editor rather than above each block. This option might seem less alien to you.

If you click “Options” and tick “Fullscreen mode”, the wp-admin sidebar on the left will be removed, and if you click “Settings” (cog symbol) in the top right of the block editor, the page and block settings sidebar on the right will be removed. This looks less-cluttered visually and perhaps more like a word processor.

You can use a plugin to revert to the Classic Editor but it may not be supported beyond 2022.

Also, check out Google Sites. It’s editor might be more to your liking.

If you click “Options” (three dots symbol) in the top right of the block editor and click “Preferences”, you’ll be able to deactivate particular features, blocks, and panels thereby simplifying your editing experience further.

The block editor is limited when I want to list excerpts from posts with a certain catagory for example.

Editing text content is limited (unless I drill down, which is why I want a Word ribbon menu).

I’ve added different block addons and found these useful, but it is still very clunky and unintuitive. This maybe as I said at the start, because i am used to wordprocessor style web design with everything available on the page.

Use the Query Loop block. Add the block, click “Start blank”, and choose “Title & Excerpt”. In the block settings sidebar menu to the right, scroll down to “Filters” and specify the category you want to limit the list to in the “Category” text box.

What text editing tools do you find yourself having to “drill down” for?
