WordPress 2.3.2 Version In Header – “Keep For Stats”

    Hello,

    Version 2.3.2 includes a line of PHP code in the header section of all of my themes that inserts the version number of WordPress, along with an HTML comment that says, “Keep For Stats”, in a META tag in the HEADER section of the HTML document.

    To me, this is a huge footprint that I don’t want served up to my blog visitors.

    Does anybody know exactly why this was added? Does taking it out break functionality? And whose “Stats” are affected by removing it?

    Even better… has this been there all along and I’m just now noticing it? 🙂

    It’s been there all along. Feel free to remove it if you don’t want it.

    Yes it has always been there, it lets the developers keep track of how many people are using each version of WordPress. It also lets potential hackers know if you are using an insecure version, so it serves as an incentive to keep you installation up to date!

    Many thanks to all. I went back to an older version and saw that it read “Please keep for stats” after my initial post, so I figured it was a WordPress request.

    And actually, you got it right, GrabAThene; I’m more interested in making it harder for hackers (although it’s hard to hide anything from a tireless script, and it’s very easy to upgrade now).
