WordPress 4.4.1 has broken the comment sorting feature

The default sorting has been broken by the latest WP update. All comments are now being sorted from oldest down the newest ones, regardless of the setting in the native WP settings menu. It can be fixed manually by clicking a different sorting option (the newest first) in the discussion module but every webpage reload actually resets the setting back to the “oldest-first” mode.
