WordPress as CMS with additional blog

    I currently have a WP blog. I originally thought the separation between Pages and Posts would suffice for my needs, but it is becoming evident that I would be better of with a main site (www.site.com, containing what I originally wanted to have as Pages) with an additional blog subdomain (www.site.com/blog/).

    So here is my problem. I would like to run the static site (www.site.com), which itself will have additional content added constantly, with wordpress as a CMS. And then I would like to run the blog (www.site.com/blog/) using wordpress as well. What is the best way to go about doing this? Should I install two instances of wordpress? Or would I be better off using multisite? Or is there a third option I’m not aware of?

    The second part of my dilemma involves how to reorganize the blog content I already have on my domain (www.site.com) into the two separate areas (www.site.com and http://www.site.com/blog/) without losing anything, doing appropriate redirects, etc. Would one or the other solution lend itself better to this task?

    A multisite may be too extreme for what you want to do. You can create a page such as blog in which it will be of course, “http://www.site.com/blog” and only show your posts while the main site will only show the page content.

    I’d like to know more details of what you are truly trying to achieve. An actual URL would help as well.

    The site is http://www.thegermanprofessor.com. I currently have it set up as a blog only.

    For the main site pages, I’d like to get rid of the right sidebar and have all of the static content available via the top menu bar with an additional link on the top menu bar to the blog.

    The blog link would load the blog posts and include the right sidebar showing the most recent posts, like it currently does.

    Is it possible to do both things with only one WP installation?

    Oh yes, this is possible with only one WP installation.

    There are several ways to do this, but here’s one of the easiest ways to do it.

    If you go to the backend -> Settings -> Reading then select the “A static page (select below)” option and setting the front page to whatever page you desire that will hold the static content then the blog to the blog page itself.

    Nota bene: on the static pages, when you edit them individually, there should be an option to disable sidebars based on the template you want to use.
