WordPress Auto Update Fail

    My site recently updated to version 3.9.1 through automatic update. Only problem is once the update happened my site went crazy. So here is a list of everything that’s happened so far and how I need help.

    1. Site displays message across top of dashboard stating that the automatic update failed and I need to re-install. Any attempt to re-install leads to a blank page on my site stating the page is not found.

    2. The most common cause of this is a plugin. I contacted my host and stated my issue. They said there was a plugin consuming enough resources it was maxing out the memory.

    3. I disabled all plugins as recommended by various users in an attempt to single out the plugin. I disabled them through myphpadmin because WordPress dashboard would not allow me to disable them.

    4. So I did what any frustrated WordPress user would do. I deleted the current WordPress installation and re-installed it on a clean drive. Re-uploaded the theme, content, and plugins (dumb move) and the error still persists. I also contacted the author of the WordPress theme we use and asked if there were any known issues. There are not any issues to their knowledge.

    So now I am left with a couple questions:
    1. How do I fix this?
    2. This may a difficult question to answer, but I did notice in my SQL database that I have a number of tables or maybe installations. Forgive me – I don’t know much about SQL. What I did see that was interesting is that say a certain table like say wp_options wasn’t present. Instead I had wp_chgklt_options and another table labeled wp_tjaqje_options.

    Is it okay to have tables listed like this or should I start back with a brand new database?

    Having tables like:

    wp_chgklt_options is fine but you should only have one.
    I don’t know why you would have also wp_tjaqje_options

    Before you scrap your database and start with a fresh install, try doing the following.

    Go to your site via FTP
    Navigate to the wp-content/ folder
    Rename the plugins to –plugins or whatever , crappy-plugins will do as well.

    By renaming your plugins, you deactivate them automatically.

    Go in your dashboard and then see if the update works.

    Then go back to your –plugins folder and rename it plugins.

    All of your plugins will now be deactivated and you can re-activate them, but I would try to figure out which one is using up all of the resources.

    Did you host give you an idea of which plugin could be doing this?

    I forgot to mention it, but I’ve already done what you prescribed. And…it didn’t work.

    Unfortunately, my host did not know which plug-in it was. Nor did he have any real good solutions…only potential problems.

    What would be the advantages of a brand new database? Could that fix the issue? What do I lose by doing that? Sorry – I am a novice with SQL.

    If everything else failed, then yes. Perhaps try with a new database.
    I would export the content, using the Tools > Export function.

    Re-install WordPress with a new db, import your content and then reset everything.

    The downfall of doing it this way is that you’ll need to go through your settings, theme, widgets, menus. At least then you’ll have a clean install though.
