• So I am currently making my way through and trying to understand wordpress. My company decided they wanted a web person, and while I have a strong background in IT, Web Design is a different beast for me.

They fired the web guy and had me take over. They’re not really focused on the web part of things until the end of the year so I have plenty of time to learn.

    Here’s my issues.

I went into the file manager on Cpanel and deleted all of the wordpress files. Yes I have backups, but I have tried many different times to unzip the files back into the file manager and even deleted and re-added the database, but nothing is working.

Ihave a full cpanel backup and from what I can tell, I do have the SQL backup from the site, but in trying to install manually, I’ve had no luck. I’ve definitely learned a lot from trial and error, but I’m not sure how to proceed. Anyway I can get some guidance from someone.

I wouldn’t mind someone remoting in and helping too. I really seemed to have messed things up.

Please don’t offer to send or post logon credentials on these forums:

So my assumption is (1) you removed everything in your public_html folder but (2) you did not drop the database. Is that correct? If so, just unzip the backup locally on your PC and use FTP to push them back to your site. If you do that, what happens when you try to access the site?

No. I dropped the database too. I figured since there was a site backup, the database would be backed up too. I think it is, I’m still learning the file structure so I can’t tell for sure. What’s the difference between using the FTP to put the files on vs just compressing the zip files that I have an adding them that way through File Manager?

My goal was to try and approach it backwards so that I would understand.

    This is the website.

And it never occurred to you to try this on a test site first?

Right now, I get a 403 (permission) error on your site. Check the permissions on the folder and files.

No. My apologies, I just went in figuring I would go backwards.

Since my company doesn’t really care about the site, I’m not under any pressure. But it’s crazy how in a matter of a few minutes I was able to completely remove the site.

How would I change my file permissions so that you’re able to view them.

I deleted the entire public_html for my site. I still have the folder, but specifically for richtechdisplay.com, it’s all gone.

What are the ownership and permissions on the files? Try making a screen shot. Post it on imgur.com and put a link to that image here. Though, at this point, I think you’re best off contacting your hosting company as they have access to all of that and can probably fix it for you.

But it’s crazy how in a matter of a few minutes I was able to completely remove the site.

You’re the one that deleted all the files! What did you think would happen?

    Thread Starter displaysvegas

    (@displaysvegas)

I understand. But I did that thinking that a manual restore would be fine. I have a backup of the site. Yes, I what I did was stupid. I’m just trying to figure out how to fix it so I can learn.

I understand what the ownership and permissions are on the files, yes. But how do I change them in a way so that you can view them?

My thing is, I have a full backup of my website, including the Cpanel. Will this be enough in the long run to restore everything?

Instead of trying to unzip the files directly on the server, which could fail for a variety of reasons, just download a fresh copy of WordPress from https://ww.wp.xz.cn/download/ unzip it on your computer and upload the files via SFTP or FTP, or a file manager in your hosting account’s control panel (consult your hosting provider’s documentation for specifics on these).

Once that’s done, unzip the backup you have on your computer, and do the same with the backed up /wp-content/ directory.

    (@displaysvegas)

So I have done that. But do I need to reinstall WordPress through Cpanel?

    Moderator James Huff

    (@macmanx)

No, re-installing WordPress through cPanel would do exactly what you have just done.

Are you still having trouble? If so, would you please clearly describe exactly what is happening with your site now?

If I go to richtechdisplay.com – it takes me back to the first domain we had which is richtechcreative.com

    The page I see is this…. https://imgur.com/sF4cgVJ

Ok, a few things to check:

    1. Make sure that the domain richtechdisplay.com is not being forwarded to richtechcreative.com (check your hosting provider and domain registrar’s documentation for specifics)

    2. Make sure that the siteurl and home values in the database reference the proper domain: https://codex.ww.wp.xz.cn/Changing_The_Site_URL#Changing_the_URL_directly_in_the_database (you’ll find phpMyAdmin in your hosting account’s cPanel)
