Sorry to hear you have been having such an unpleasant time! It does not sound like you have been receiving competent assistance in all this. Any professional coder should have no problem with answering and resolving these issues.
My migration of WP.com blog posts to WP.org failed. I’ve been t/sing them since the beginning, even had coders trying to break up my larger files into smaller ones and they still not all transferred over. Why is this even an issue?
It is very hard to diagnose this problem with so little information. What method did you use to migrate your posts? How many posts are we talking about (roughly speaking)? What kind of error message(s) did you receive, if any?
WPBeginner has a good tutorial on migrating from WordPress.com to ww.wp.xz.cn, if you have not already seen it.
“You can now save time spent logging in by connecting your WordPress.com account to F. P. Dorchak.”
This can be confusing, yes. The reason for this message is that you probably have Jetpack or a similar plugin installed on your ww.wp.xz.cn that utilizes resources from WordPress.com to help manage your site (statistics, security, etc). You can just ignore it if you want and login the regular way. Or simply uninstall Jetpack if you don’t wish to use it and you’ll just see the regular login page.
And that is another thing: there is no one-stop-shopping for links on how do get things done. There seem to be 15,000 disparate locations one has to search out or be directed to to get the job done. There needs to be a SINGLE (one) (1) (less than two) location where everything you need to know is located. It should be EASY and OBVIOUS to find. It should not be in coder-speak. All direction should actually work.
I believe I have on the order some 300 posts. I did everything as directed in multiple locations to migrate over my WP.com blog posts, and some worked…and some blew up. And it was left up to me to decide what size file to break up into. Me?! I had to plead with the “Happiness Engineers” to get them to do this…they finally did…and seven sets of files still failed.
I think Jetpack is used to migrate data files. Not sure of other functions.
But what is the point of having a self-hosted site on WP.org over doing it on WP.com and not going self hosted? Is there really any advantage? And can I actually deactivate my WP.com account and just go WP.org?
Please…forgive any displayed attitude, but I am extremely frustrated….
WordPress is open source, which means it is a community-driven project. As such, there is a plethora of tutorials and guides online. Some are good, some- not so much.
There is a single authoritative reference point, though: ww.wp.xz.cn
More specifically, the Codex covers all the various aspects of the platform and how it works. The instructions there for any given task should work. It does, however, feature a lot of code/codespeak simply because that’s what WordPress is: code.
WordPress.com and ww.wp.xz.cn serve different needs for different people. If you don’t see a benefit in migrating, then maybe you don’t need to.
The main reason I know of for people moving from WordPress.com to ww.wp.xz.cn is to have more flexibility and control over presentation and functionality. ww.wp.xz.cn has much more of both, but one needs to be able to code to a certain extent (CSS, mainly) in order to utilize it.
Lastly, I can see you are using a theme running the Genesis framework. You might consider trying a different theme to work with – there are plenty of good free ones available (Dashboard>Appearance>Themes). The Genesis framework is potent, but it is also complex, and may be more than you need. I would say it definitely has a steeper learning curve than other, simpler, themes.
Best of luck to you.
P.s. Yes, if you decide to migrate, you can deactivate your WordPress.com account and just go self-hosted with ww.wp.xz.cn. You’ll just need to delete or disable whatever plugin (Jetpack, e.g.) is utilizing it.
