wordpress removes tags

Hi all,
why does wordpress remove stuff when I switch to visual writing. Most of the time I use the regular text writing mode to make post, but when i write something and then switch to visual mode and back again stuff like <p> and </p> or </br> are removed by wordpress, even the   is gone. This is driving me crazy.
