• I want to start the post by saying I have not used WordPress before and am pretty unfamiliar with the workings.

I recently inherited a club website run through WordPress. I logged in with the credentials given to me. On the first page when logging in, I was prompted to update WordPress to 4.7.3. It warned me the site would be in maintenance mode during the update.

I clicked the link, but the whole browser sort of froze, and I had to close it. Now, our website is broken and when I try to log in, it claims there is no user with those credentials. I know the credentials should work because I had used them to log in the first time.

Clearly interrupting the update really messed up the site – but I have no idea how to go about fixing it if it won’t even let me log in. Please help!!

The page I need help with: [log in to see the link]

    1. Redo the update manually, and update to 4.8.2. https://codex.ww.wp.xz.cn/Updating_WordPress#Manual_Update

    2. This article lists 7 completely different ways to reset your password. Any one of them will work and do the job. Find the one that’s right for you and use that: https://codex.ww.wp.xz.cn/Resetting_Your_Password

Hello, srstash13, & welcome. Actually it appears your site has updated, though I won’t swear that the full update was completed.

The site is working to some extent, though you are getting a ‘nothing found’ message on the homepage. I’m guessing the site was not backed up prior to updating. Just so you know in the future, when updating from 1 major version to another, ie, 4.7x to 4.8x, etc, it’s always a good thing to back up the database, which is where the majority of your content actually resides, just in case something goes awry. That’s not a criticism. It’s just a suggestion for future updates.

This looks to be hosted by UW. Do you have an information technologist whom you can contact there to ask how you’d access your database, ie, via PhpMyAdmin or similar?

    Steve,

Thanks for the reply! The big problem is that the login info is not just limited to the password. The website will not accept my username in the forgotten password field, claiming that there is no registered user with that name. Still, I know it had worked previously. I’m looking into getting access to the recovery email, but I’m not sure that will work either.

Check the wp_users table with phpmyadmin to see if your user record is still there.
