ww.wp.xz.cn not loading properly on mobile
-
There seems to have been a recent update to the theming of wp.org. I used to be able to view and respond to support forum issues and browse the site on ios safari, but now it seems the site is going the way of responsive but only about 10% leaving it nearly unusable on iphone.
Ive searched but cant find any other topics on this. Is this just me. It is quite annoying for such a large production site like this to be mid transition as it seems.

I’m sorry that you have been experiencing problems with the WPORG site. In reality, WPORG is a huge network, so any changes will tend to be appear slow as you may only be seeing part of the bigger picture (if you forgive the pun). Also resources are limited, so changes may be undertaken on a prioritised basis “as and when|2, so the network (as a whole) may be in a constant state of transition.
I’ve not seen any other reports of issues when accessing the site using an iPhone. Can you clarify exactly what issues you are having and where?
I completely understand but this seems to either be half done which isnt something i would expect to be released by WP typically or an oversight that just hasn’t been reported. I would be happy to help in any way in the devleopment cycle itself and am an experienced responsive designer/developer but just not sure how to get in on the process.
Here is a screenshot from my iphone of my plugins support forum.
The issue is not the lack of suitably qualified people but the sheer size & complexity of the ww.wp.xz.cn network. As a result, even very small changes can be very difficult to implement and can take time. I’ve pinged the person with the appropriate oversight about this and I am sure that, if he does have anything to say, he will respond shortly. π
I’m sorry if I came across as rude. It was’t my intention. I’ve been working with wp for going on 8 years now and have a huge respect for what you guys do.
After about 100 google searches and a huge amount of frustration that google just wanted to serve me up info on plugins for mobile and responsive sites rather than anything wp.org specifically related I simply meant it as a report of a problem I couldn’t find elsewhere.
I would be interested in finding out about joining the WP development team in some capacity though as it’s a great product and has supported my living for many years now.

Oh – you didn’t sound rude at all! And I do hope I didn’t sound as if I perceived it in that way but I do think many people have no idea just how huge the network is when you take into account the plugin & theme repos, the forums, the Codex, all of the various Make sites, Trac etc etc. (I’m not sure I have a proper grasp of it myself yet.) And a great deal of it is custom coded and inter-dependant.
As a result, when some – apparently simple – changes are requested, the answer is sometimes “Possibly but don’t hold your breathe as this is going to take quite a bit of work” or even “Sorry. No can do. The system just isn’t built to allow <foo>”. As far as I am aware, there are definite long term plans for the site and the network as a whole but due to the aforesaid complexity – those changes will be veeery slooow.

Are you familiar with Trac? If so, ever thought of pitching in and helping with some patches? There are also various Make sites/groups that handle specific areas of development such as:
http://make.ww.wp.xz.cn/ui/
http://make.ww.wp.xz.cn/accessibility/I know the latter are very short of experienced developers to help with code patches.
I am definitely familiar with trac and have been using it off and on for plugins and subitting/monitoring core changes for years now. This is the first I’ve see links goths make sites and will be checking them out to see where my help could best be used. Is there a full list of places that need help anywhere?
There isn’t a global “help wanted” list that I’m aware of but the Accessibility group have been short of experienced patch committers from Day 1 and still are as of two days ago. At this point I have to admit a bias as I’m part of that group & helped to get it going. π
That said, there is a very real need there for your kind of expertise, if you’re interested. All you need to do is apply via http://make.ww.wp.xz.cn/accessibility/join-us/ using the email address you’ve used here, indicate that you’re a developer with Trac experience and I can assure you that you will be welcomed with open arms and a whole list of tickets that need patches.
Yes, we are well aware of the problems. The new mobile header has made all the other parts of the site which are not as keen with mobile widths come sharply into focus.
There is no fixed timeframe for fixing these issues, however we are working on them and will deploy the fixes as we come up with them.
You can read more about the header changes here:
Hey Otto,
Thanks for the response.
Might just be me but i wouldnt typically release something that would affect upwards of 20% of my clients users in a negative way partially finished like this.
Im not sure what wp.org’s analytics look like but im sure its in the millions of views per day which could add up to 100s of 1000s of views/users per day that arnt able to use the site properly.
I understand that it takes time as all great things do but this literally makes the site nearly unusable on mobiles which is where i do 80% of my support responses.
I could propose a quick solution that would be best of both worlds for the current situation. Comment out the current meta viewport tag and add the following.
<meta name="viewport" content="width=1080, initial-scale=1.0">You can adjust the 1080px size there but this will cause mobiles to display the desktop size by default.
This is what i do for responsive sites that just arnt there yet and will allow you to tweak the breakpoints and view them in standard browsers but not break mobile views.
Hope this helps and is some positive feedback to move in the right direction.
PS. I have long been hoping WP.org as well as the WP dashboard would go the way of responsive and am very happy to see this happening finally.
PPS. I have a great deal of experience with responsive design and implementation and would be glad to lend a hand to move things along.
Thanks.
