Meow Lightbox should work with any setup, including galleries other than Meow Gallery.
If only the thumbnails open, just make sure that you have selected “srcset” or “full” in the Performance settings.
Also, if the media is not recognized directly, which could mean not loading the src or full resolution, you can enable the “aggressive resolve” option to hopefully find the right data for these media.
I believe NextGEN references media in its own way which might make things a bit more complex, but they also have a built in lightbox.
