Working with other browsers

I’ve designed my website (http://obliviouslyyours.com/blog) in Internet Explorer, and I’ve finally gotten to the point where it looks *exactly* how I want it to…in IE. Now, I KNOW my coding is pretty much–well–atrocious (I fear running it through the validator must be coronary-inducing to you PHP gods), but as a 17-year-old girl just having a bit of fun, I have to admit that I really don’t care so long as it looks presentable and runs fairly well. In IE, I have somehow accomplished that feat, but when I looked at the page through Firefox last night it was an absolute disaster. Something funny happened to the scrolling and div layers and text size and…ugh, just ugh.

I haven’t tried Netscape or AOL or anything else, but I would imagine it’s a similar reaction in different browsers and due to my shoddy coding…but honestly I have no idea where to start. I don’t know much about Firefox — does it not take div layers well or something? If you take a quick look through the validator can you spot the BIG mistake that’s making it do this?

Before I posted this I searched and found a topic that said you should design things in Firefox first and THEN go to “the beast” IE…but it’s kind of too late for that now and I am very, very weary of this — honestly at this point I’m almost tempted to just say “Too bad!” and shrug my shoulders. There wouldn’t be a semi-quick way to solve this, by any chance, would there?

I really appreciate your patience, and any help would be extremely appreciated. Thank you from the bottom of my newbie soul.

The part that’s off is actually the iframe not a scrollable div. My recommendation is to have a look at WordPress plugins for shoutboxes, like http://blog.jalenack.com/ajax/

Okay, I took out the iframe so currently there’s no shoutbox…but I still seem to be having the same problems. Could there be something else, by any chance?

I am using Firefox and reading your fonts are a bit hard.

In Safari it’s ledgible, bright, and aligned to the left (did you mean to center it?)

First off, you don’t close your SMALL tag after the date. In Firefox, the fonts get progressively smaller as you go to lower entries on the page.

For some reason, you open the “page” DIV tag and then close it on the very next line. The “page” DIV tag should be closed at the end of all your PHP code. Of course, after looking at your CSS file, there is no “page” tag described.

As far as scrollbars, Firefox’s scrollbars are a part of the Firefox theme and won’t change via CSS.

yeah, it’s pretty hard to read in FF. The second post has the class ‘small’ set twice somehow. the first doesn’t – that’s why you can read it ok in FF.

I’m still not sure what you’d like to change in FF but if you want the header to scroll with the body like it (incorrectly) does in IE, take out the word “fixed” from the #headerimg section of your css file. fixed means it stays put, which is what FF is doing.

you might also try removing the margin-left portion of this:
#sidebar ul ul { list-style-image: URL(images/listitem.png); list-style-type: circle;

margin-left: 20px;
}

to see if that helps with the shift of the sidebar content in firefox. when you’re troubleshooting, dont forget – Firefox is probably rendering it correctly. dont assume, even though I’m sure it feels that way, that firefox is broken.
