Working with wordpress on a subdomain (?)

Hello everyone,

I currently have a website that i’m looking to remodel ( I didn’t use wordpress to make it). It currently gets some traffic and I don’t want to work on my main domain and take my website down while I remodel. What can I do? Is it possible to install wordpress on a subfolder with its own domain and work on it without affecting my main website? If so, what steps would I have to take? My hosting service has CPANEL, by the way.
