I am having the same issue …
My images and GPS coordinates are in the southern hemisphere.
Everything I see that you have demonstrated is from the northern hemisphere and both ‘alternateroute’ and myself are in the southern hemisphere and having this same issue. Is this a bug?
Could it be the way the long/lat are displayed?
I added in the Long and Lat that I got from Google Maps, ie.
-8.786273,115.225324
as well as
longitude: E 150°21.76’0″
latitude: S 33°43.22’0″
and made sure there was a preview image but still no luck.

@alternateroute: You need to define preview-pics for each gallery, these pictures are displayed on the worldmap.
@frank Warwick: There was such a bug in a early build, but I fixed that. Please mail me a example picture, may be, the exif structure is causing the problems.

Thanks for the advice.
I have preview pics selected for each gallery. I even went and changed a few of the previews to try and kick-start it, but they still didn’t display.
Although Frank mentioned I was in the Southern Hemisphere, I have photos taken in Switerland and Italy. I selected a new preview pic for this gallery as well and it still didn’t appear.
In case it was the theme interfering, I changed the theme (to Twenty Twelve) and it didn’t make a difference.
Do you have any other suggestions?
