While not new to computers, I AM new to WordPress and MySQL. In fact, I first started to use WP a few weeks ago, when v3.6 was introduced. And I know that I will feel even dumber when I have the answer but here goes:
I don’t understand the relationship between the db and WP. When 3.6 installs (1-click through my hosting company,HostGator) it installs a MySQL database called username_wrdp1. If my ultimate goal is to use WP for a web site (or two) and a blog (or two) why would you not rename (through PHPAdmin), the database something identifiable as belonging to that site or blog? Even updating the wp-config file to reflect the correct user name, password and database in question gives me a ‘cannot connect to database’. I know it’s ‘pilot error’ but I can’t see it at the moment.I have been putzing with this for some time. I think I understand that 3.6 can do multiple sites/blogs, but each requires a different installation. That’s not the issue at the moment but I don’t want to spend time modifying a site and its database only to find I should have created separate ones. Is there a 25-word-or-less answer for this, or a link? Many thanks.

I had to deal with that just this morning while figuring which of my three installation-script-named databases belongs to which site so I could delete the fourth one (from a previous-abandoned installation) I no longer needed.

I believe a plugin such as Better WP Security can rename a *new* database immediately after installation with no trouble, but I have decided to just leave mine as they are now that I know which is where.

Well, maybe I’m just losing my mind or am too impatient. (Lord, grant me patience and give it to me NOW!) 🙂
I went away for a bit and came back, expecting to have to create a database or at the very least, remove and reinstall WP. But, it seems (SEEMS) to have accepted my renaming of the database and user, password and db name changes in wp-config. I am now proceeding with modifying the site with no ‘cannot connect to database’ error message. Really? Live and learn, I guess? Did it just take a minute to register the change or did logging and and back in somehow re-register the db? Hmmmm. That last is, perhaps, rhetorical. So far, so good on my little soap opera. 🙂

Sounds like a cranky server – they can do weird stuff sometimes. Glad you’re back up and running whatever fixed it :).

Maybe, but as an engineer in another life (which works against me more often that not these days!), it would be nice to know ‘what the danged deal is’.
    I’ll just watch and wait.
Thanks for everyone’s interest; I appreciate it!
