• When I log into my website admin area there is no sign of the following functions –
    Appearance
    Settings
    Plug-ins
    Users

Also, I can ‘view’ posts and pages, but I can’t edit them?

Odd, sounds like your account is not setup as admin. Do you have a link to your blog? It might help identify what’s going on.

Hi JD, thanks for your reply. The thing is, everything’s been fine since I set up the site 6 weeks ago? But recently, I’ve noticed a lot of ‘comments’, have been posted (none of which have been approved), which are absolutely nothing to do with the topic of my site. I contacted my hosting company and they advised me to deactivate the plug-ins and then reactivate them, but I can’t do that because the plug-in function isn’t even there! The actual website seems ok on the outside, but you know what it’s like, there’s always something that needs a tweak. By the way, I’ve just upgraded to WordPress 2.9.2, which is fine and the problem started before I did that anyway?
    Thanks again, Ray.

To be honest, I was looking for the link to see if there is any external evidence of a hack. That’s okay, there are some things to try.

Something goofy is going on so give this a shot.

Start with making a fresh backup of your files and database.

It’s my stock response, safety nets are your friend.

    Starting with your plugins:

Once the backup is safe where you can get it back, try going into your wp-content folder and renaming the plugins folder to plugins-old. That’s a gruesome way to disable all of your plugins but it works.

Now in your browser clear all your cookies and try to login in as admin. If you get all of the menus back, then create a new empty plugins folder and re-download your plugins from the sources.

Activate the new copies one at a time and see if that works.

I’ll give it a go JD. Thanks for your help, Ray.

Jan asked for the url of the blog, because a couple of eyes extra never hurts.

And just as a thought, see if you can use your control panel to make your user into an admin or add an admin so you at least have control back over the WP backend.

Hi JD, I backed up the files and then imported them back like you advised, but alas, nothing’s changed? However, you’ll be pleased to know that I now know how to back-up my files and how to use MySQL. And I’d like to thank you for that.
    Ray.

ps – I hope you didn’t think I was being ungrateful earlier on by not giving you the link, I didn’t realise that was what you were actually asking for. My fault and I do apologise.
    Thanks again, Ray.

Not a problem! The link really was optional.

Too bad nothing’s changed. Even with disabling the plug-ins?

Give Gangleri’s advice a try at resetting your password. It really seems like your admin account got downgraded somehow.

Wa-hay! I’ve managed to sort it out. It seems the problem stemmed from when I added a different ‘User’. I have switched back to the original and everything’s hunky-dory!
Thanks for your help fellas, IOU one.
