Sounds like an installation issue – have you talked to your host about this yet?
Can you view the front-end of the site or is the 500 error happening in all WP areas?

I put a ticket in with iPage but have no response yet. I am talking about the main login to wp-admin. I don’t know how to look at anything else.
The front-end would be your site.com whereas the admin area is your site.com/wp-admin or /wp-login.php
It sounds like an installation issue and I’d see what iPage can do since we don’t have server access, etc.

I may have screwed things up. Somehow I got into wordpress.com and started seting up the site there. When I realized my error I came back and reinstalled wordpress.
Ok, wordpress.com is different than if you’re installing WordPress from iPage. With iPage it’s self hosted but wordpress.com is more of a service.
Is your URL something like my site.com or my site.wordpress.com ?

site.com I figured out how to disconnect the site at wp.com and I reinstalled WP through iPage. Now I get a DNS error instead of a 500 error. So I am on the right track. Maybe I need iPage to reset my DNS.
Yeah, it definitely sounds like an install issue. Unfortunately without server access I’d have to defer back to iPage. If things don’t get resolved after you talk to them, post back here with more info.
Have you changed the dns server on your domain to that of iPage’s already? Sometimes refreshing the DNS can take quite a while.
