wp-admin needs to be 777

I tried to upload a plugin and it failed due to a problem with a missing folder. I solved that by creating a bank folder called mu-plugins.

I then couldn’t log in, with permission errors galore. They only went when I set 777 on wp-admin and wp-includes. I know this isn’t safe, so how can I downgrade the permissions and still keep access?
