Resolved by activating plugin on staging site then migrating to live. Unsure of the exact issue but have managed to resolve for my own particluar case.

That is very unusual. When you say WP Admin stopped working, does it shows critical error or Error 500 – as that would denote PHP fatal error and in that case in PHP error log you will be able to see exactly what caused the error.
It would be great if you can share the details from the PHP error log.
I got the same problem (twice!). I had to reinstall WordPress because of this on my host. Below are the details. Let me know if you need more details.
