wp-config.php password lines cause a fail

    When I add the two lines recommended in WP Mail SMTP settings to wp-config.php to mask the SMTP username password, emails fail to go through.

    But when I remove those lines all is OK. So, from both a security and functionality standpoint, any suggestions?

    Hi @everanomad,

    From the security standpoint, we highly recommend you set up your password in your wp-config.php. If the test email fails, it might be due to the constants not set properly. When you get a chance, could you please share the error details while sending test emails with these two lines still added in wp-config.php? This is because your password will be stored in a database in the plain text if not set in wp-config.php, so as long as you don’t see anything suspicious within your site, it’s okay to save the password in the database as well.

    FYI: it seems older versions of WP Mail SMTP left plugin references after deletion. So I searched and deleted those from my data tables. Then I installed the latest version (1.6.2) and was successfully able to use the password constant in wp-config.
