if I can set WP cron to fire every 10 minutes? Or would that prevent the plugin from working properly?

I don’t think that is a good idea. Every 10 minutes might over load your servers resources.

Hi, it is up to you to change your cron settings. You can try to set them at 5 minutes. If something happens, revert the settings back to the default.
