• Hi there,

I was having issues with plugins and a broken theme and couldn’t access my site via wp-admin, so logged into Filezilla and changed the name of the folder to plugins.deactivate.

That worked like a charm, and I was able to get back in and sort out my site. I got it looking just right, but needed to access my plugins again. I went back into the site and changed the title of the directory from plugins.deactivate back to ‘plugins’.

Total meltdown. I now have this error

Warning: require(/home/content/19/9218819/html/wp-includes/load.php) [function.require]: failed to open stream: No such file or directory in /home/content/19/9218819/html/wp-settings.php on line 21

Fatal error: require() [function.require]: Failed opening required ‘/home/content/19/9218819/html/wp-includes/load.php’ (include_path=’.:/usr/local/php5_3/lib/php’) in /home/content/19/9218819/html/wp-settings.php on line 21

I’m very confused as I didn’t go near the wp-settings directory. I’m worried that (as I have a sticky and unpredictable mouse at the mo), I’ve somehow completely accidentally dragged and dropped/deleted something.

When I looked back over changes, it claimed I’d moved one of the CSS files out of the layout folder. I found where it had gone to and added it back in thinking this might help, but I still have the fatal error.

I’m a bit concerned. If it was a theme layout issue I’d delete the theme and reinstall, but it seems to be more fundamental than that.

Please help if possible! I’m not very experienced and was proud I’d manage to resolve the initial broken theme issue using tutorials, so I’m gutted I’ve gone on to ‘break’ my site again.

  • Try re-uploading all files & folders – except the wp-content folder – from a fresh download of WordPress. Make sure that you delete the old copies of files & folder before uploading the new ones.

    Hi esmi
As just the wp-includes folder seems to be ‘upset’, is it worth replacing that directory first or would you still encourage me to delete and reinstall all other directories apart from wp-content?

You could try it but if you do have damaged files in wp-includes, there is a significant chance that there are damaged files elsewhere.

Esmi, it worked. I officially love you forever and owe you three million drinks if I ever meet you. Huge massive thanks, you’re such a star to spend your time helping poor, unfortunate fools like me! x

    Glad I could help 🙂

If this happens again, you might want to have a word with your hosts and ask them to investigate why WordPress core files are being damaged on the server. Once in a blue moon is acceptable. Once a week or month is not.
