you have to create a new db and import the backed up one in it.
Wordprest is wrong; your issues have nothing to do with your database.
The WordPress file upload and update didn’t complete for some reason. Manually upload your wordpress files again via FTP with Filezilla or another FTP program.
Wordprest has been giving some very bad advice I’ve noticed.
Yea, I’ve corrected him/her a number of times….
I’m new to FTP etc… What do I have to do? To erase the WP 2.8.6 upload zip file from the FTP and then manually do things directly in the FTP Editor??
Really appreciate your help
Many Thanks
Unzip the files on your PC and then upload them to your web host; see Uploading WordPress to a remote host « WordPress Codex.

I updated from 2.3 (I think) to 2.86 via CPanel and now all I get is a blank screen.
It’s a mature site with hundreds of articles that I do not wish to lose. What is the safest way to correct this problem?
Reupload the wordpress files manually via FTP; problems like blank screens after upgrades are usually because of incomplete uploads. If that doesn’t fix it, rename your plugins folder to see if a plugin is causing the problems.
But, you should have done an incremental upgrade from 2.3 to 2.5 to 2.8.3 in order for the database to be correctly updated. It probably didn’t hurt anything, but it might have.
@pedrocosta1981:
1. donot delete anything
2a. simply connect via ftp to your server and goto wordpress home directory
2b. simply upload the content of the latest wordpress 2.8.6 to your home directory. (if it asks to overwrite the files, select yes, there is option to do the same for current que, check this to make your life easy)
Thanks, songdogtech, that did it. I did have to change the plugins directory name. For those with similar problems reading this, perhaps that should be the first step before re-uploading the files.
Thanks songdotech. Changed the name of the plugins directory name and, voila, it worked.
I had been sleeping badly because of it.
Many thanks
Oops.
I have access to WP Dashboard, but get a blank screen when I digit the site’s address. I don´t find the site and the plugins and theme I had are all deactivated.
Can somebody help me?
when I digit the site’s address
I don’t know what you mean by that.
Did you recently upgrade? Do you have at least the default theme? Post your URL.
