    The debug network codex suggest I need to check that all the database tables have been created. As far as I can see there are no wordpress tables at all in my database. SO how do I make it create them? The wp=config fie has the correct entries in. afaics

    define(‘DB_NAME’, ‘patbellc_wordpress’);

    /** MySQL database username */
    define(‘DB_USER’, ‘patbellc_patbell’);

    my justhost entry is
    Database Size Users Actions
    patbellc_wordpress 0.74 MB
    patbellc_patbell

    What’s the actual error you’re getting?

    Running through the codex to create the network, I create my sites and see them in my sites but dashboard just shows 404 error.

    I have a wildcard domain setup

    I have tried without and with creating a subdomain with my host as subdomain.rootdomain (which creates a public_html/subdomain). In the host

    I have tried redirecting this to just rootdomain.

    I have also tried deleting the host created folder and just get a server error instead of the 404 error.

    I allowed wordpress to create its own database this time with no inut from me.

    So, I am getting nowhere, is it my host? (they dont help, just refer me to the wordpress support which I have followed to the letter.)

    In poring over the forum on this I have now deleted all my subdomains, leaving just the wildcard. Removed the folders that had been created off public_html. Uninstalled wordpress deleted all the leftover folders and files. Reinstalled wordpress and edited wp-config and .htaccess. Recreated my sites in WordPress. I can see the created sites in network admin but not in the pull down. I can ‘edit’ the sites and, for example the domain is normallivingwithibs.patbell.co.uk with a path of / But can I get the dashboard? Can I heck – just a 404 error

    What does the 404 look like? 🙂 Does it look like your main site or something else?

    Not my site no – Its got my hosts logo justhost

    404 Error File Not Found
    The page you are looking for might have been removed,
    had its name changed, or is temporarily unavailable.

    btw I have now followed all your instructions, I think. There are no subfolders. The only subdomain I have defined is the wildcard.

    Don’t know if this helps but whilst normallivingwithibs.patbell.co.uk/wp-admin generates a 404 error.
    normallivingwithibs.patbell.co.uk goes to patbell.co.uk and
    patbell.co.uk/wp-admin goes to wordpress admin fine.

    Could it be the wildcard subdomain isn’t working properly?

    I have moved on now, thanks to your help with the subdomains. It has been educational. Thanks. btw your ebook Multisite101 have I graduated beyond to 110 yet?

    It was the subdomains. Better late than never… but I now have actually purchased Multisite 101, also 110 hopefully to ease off on you for the future.
