Wrap function in align and font specifications

    I’m not sure why this code isn’t working, I’ve tried with inserting echo $date as well and nothing.

$date = the_date('l - F jS', '<h2>', '</h2>');

	<div align="center"><font color=\"#FF00FF\"><$date></font></div>
