I had the same issue with 5.9.8.1 and made a downgrade to 5.9.7.3 and all works like before.
I had the issue with all-day events, so timezones could be an issue in the update.
@wvnieuwe, have you tried resetting your timezone under Events > Settings > General > Admin Tools?
This had nothing to do with the timezone. It is not the time that changed, but only the begin-day of the event.
Now, the plugin is OK again. I don’t know why.
