Hey, thanks for reaching out & I’ll do my best to help you out with this thumbnail problem, but would it be possible for you to send me the link to the blog in question? I’d really appreciate if I could have a closer look, if possible.
The reason you mentioned could well be the cause of your problem, but if it helps for the time being, our thumbnailer works more or less in the following order (in which way it prioritizes which images are going to be used for your thumbnails):
Custom field value > Featured image > First image in blog post > Default image for blog posts without images

Hey, thanks for the links and sorry for not being able to get back to you any sooner — sorry!
I’ve checked those links once more (and all other blog posts from your blog) and am sorry to say that I’m not able to see any wrong thumbnails from your own related posts — all those thumbnails are actually extracted from the blog posts they represent (and not from some other related post).
Or am I missing something out? Which related post is showing the wrong thumbnail? And where is that image hard-coded in your theme? Any chance you could grab me a screenshot of yours?

I don’t mean that they’re displaying wrong in my internal related posts section, but rather in the ‘related posts from the web’, the related posts that appear as I type up a post.

Hmm, yes, I can see what you mean now — and it certainly isn’t the way it’s supposed to be, that’s for sure! But I have some good news & some bad news for you (at least for the time being).
The bad news is: there’s no easy, instant fix for this. Our thumbnailer for those related articles from around the web (which is also caching your blog posts) is working a bit differently than the one from the readside (the one which is extracting your thumbnails for your automatic related posts) and it needs some fixing / maintenance / attention.
The good news is that we already started this process just a couple of days ago (I kid you not!), since it’s a big priority to us — and that we (now) included your blog as an example for investigative part of our work.
But we don’t quite know when this will be finished, to be perfectly honest with you. I will let you know as soon as I know more, though, which I hope will be sooner than later.
In the meantime — you are more than welcome to ask me anything or if you notice something else that’s a bit funny, since I’ll gladly help! Let me know what you think!
