Hi YvonneTaylor!
We do have a Knowledge Base article at Yoast, on common sitemap issues that you can refer to. Your issue is definitely listed there – http://kb.yoast.com/article/123-xml-sitemap-errors
Please try that out, and then let us know your results. 🙂
All the article says is that you must have a conflicting wordpress install or poorly coded plugin which is giving out whitespace!!! I have no idea what this is or how to start looking for it.
The conflicting WordPress plugin you have is the Yoast SEO XML coding. If you do a Google search for “Yoast SEO sitemap not working”, you’ll get 21,000 entries. What is your URL to the sitemap?
Also Niles, that is a “terribly” written KB that explains lots of problems and gives you few good ways to solve the problems. I completely agree with YvonneTaylor.
YvonneTaylor we can’t get our Yoast XMLsitemap to work either. What we are going to do is turn that off. There are lots of other WordPress plugin that do sitemaps and they just work….not special hoops to jump through.
Hi YvonneTaylor,
Sometimes strange behavior may be caused by a plugin or theme conflict. The fastest way to rule out conflicts is to deactivate all non-Yoast plugins and switch to a standard theme like Twenty Fourteen. If this resolves the issue, you have a conflict and should activate one plugin at a time until you locate the conflict. Finally, after all plugins are active, switch to your theme. This will narrow down the conflict to a specific plugin or a theme conflict.
If you are unfamiliar with checking for conflicts, we wrote a small guide that will walk you through the steps. You can find it here: How To Check For Plugin Conflicts: http://kb.yoast.com/article/253-how-to-check-for-plugin-conflicts
Generally speaking, that is the fastest way to help you figure out whether the white space is coming from one of the plugins you use, one of the themes you use, or might – unfortunately – but in a human edited file such as your wp-config.

Hi Kim
Thank you for attaching the link and for the advice.
Since posting the link, I have upgraded to Yoast Premium and the problem has now been resolved, but I have a couple of other sites that this information will be useful for.
Regards
Yvonne
