Yoast advanced variables does not work

Hi, there
I looked up this template and tried to use some advanced variables for my meta description.
Here’s my description: %%date%%. by . %%name%% &&excerpt&&. However, in Snippet preview, only %%date%% is corrected translated into English words. The other two tags are not shown in the snippet.
How do I solve it?
