Yoast Notification: Change in Permalink Structure?
-
Hi, On Sunday I updated to WordPress 5.8.1 from previous 5.7 version. I now have the following message from you:
“Because of a change in your permalink structure, some of your SEO data needs to be reprocessed.”
I’ve also got a security message saying “an error occurred while checking if your site can be found by search engines”
I’m assuming this is connected.
I haven’t changed my url structure at all or made any other changes that I’m aware of. What’s going on?
The page I need help with: [log in to see the link]

Hello Choclette,
Thanks for reaching out about that Yoast SEO notification.
From v15.1, the Yoast SEO plugin can now detect the home URL or permalink structure changes. And since it’s a significant change, Yoast SEO needs to run the SEO data optimization again. You mentioned that you recently updated from WordPress 5.7 to WordPress 5.8.1; this is an example of a significant change.
Can you please confirm whether you have performed the SEO data optimization in WordPress > SEO > Tools page on your site’s dashboard? If not, can you please run the relevant analysis to see if that resolves the notice for you?
However, if you have already performed the relevant analysis, can you please deactivate and reactivate the Yoast SEO plugin temporarily on your site to see if that drops the relevant notification for you?
Furthermore, if you have a large site, you can wait for a week or so, until Yoast SEO automatically processes most of your content in the background.
Hi Maybellyne
Thanks for your quick reply.
I haven’t had a chance to perform the SEO data optimisation yet as I’ve not been around. But will give it a go tomorrow.
Hi Maybellyne
I’ve just run the SEO data optimisation and it seems to have worked. The error message has now disappeared.
I thought it was going to take ages to run as my site is quite old, but it only took about ten minutes.
Thank you for your help.
Oh boo! Twenty four hours after I ran the optimisation and everything seemed OK, the message is back.
Hi @choclette
We understand you’ve already completed the SEO data optimization under SEO > Tools, but after 24 hours, you’ve received this message of:
Because of a change in your permalink structure, some of your SEO data needs to be reprocessed.
This can be caused by a lot of things, such as a plugin that might be changing the permalinks, or other changes you’ve made to your website.
Can you please try resetting our indexables in the database tables by following the steps below?
1. Install & activate the Yoast Test Helper plugin
2. Go to Tools > Yoast Test
3. Locate the Yoast SEO section and click on the ‘Reset indexables tables & migrations’ button. The page will reload to confirm that each reset was successful. Note: this won’t actually erase your SEO data, which is also stored in WordPress’ default tables. It’ll just reset our index (custom tables) for that data.
4. Go to SEO > Tools, and under SEO data, click the “Start SEO data optimization” button to allow Yoast to rescan your content. For your site’s health and safety, we recommend creating regular backups of your site and database. This is especially important before installing, updating or removing plugins. Learn more about the benefits of regular backups.
Aside from that, if you still continue to receive the message after, we’d need to investigate on your website further, which we are unable to do so over these public forums. You might want to consider Yoast SEO Premium so we can take a closer look at this and provide you with premium personal email support.
Otherwise, you can choose to process it again or let it lazily load in the backend. The plugin itself should still work as expected.
We are going ahead and marking this issue as resolved due to inactivity. If you require any further assistance please create a new issue.
