Thanks for the details. According to the GitHub issue, our developers determined that supporting slashes in the slug isn’t a core WordPress feature, so it doesn’t look like we offered support for this in previous versions. We’re not sure why it may have worked in the past, but it doesn’t look like an option that will be supported.
We would need to take a look at your site setup to provide any further guidance.

We understand now that we were perhaps mistaken on the ability to add a / to the slug, but do have follow on questions (posted previously in the trail)
We would like to investigate further why we have some odd slugs, e.g. why there is no- between sub cats, I will find more data on that one.
