Apparently a recent WP upgrade will have caused this – my .htaccess file became ‘odd’ (as described by hosting support). They did something on their end to allow me to login to wordpress, then requested I go into Settings – Permalinks and click Save Changes to fix the .htaccess file.
Thanks for the advice from all recipients, set me off on the right track.
