I do have an Akismet key, and it is active. I confirmed this by entering a comment using [email protected] as the email address. It was correctly identified as spam and held in the spam queue.
Prior to this test, the “Jetpack has protected your site from __ spam comments” counter went up to 4, and I still have no spam showing.
I have reset the Jetpack connection as described.
This is a personal website with no advertising whatsoever.
I saw a huge uptick in this with some other WP sites I manage. This always involved web hosts that were using nginx as a cache in front of Apache, and it always affected the site until the host fixed it. I was never told what they did to fix it, but any other sites hosted on the server would have the same issue.
This makes me think it has something to do with nginx and/or some improper configuration on their end. Especially because the issue was always fixed without intervention on my part.
