Update: It works, but only when the permalinks are set to something other than default.
However, I’d like to keep the default permalink structure. Any ideas for a workaround?

The language switching is done by having a multisite, so not by a plugin.
and, I wouldn’t want to change permalink settings, because I don’t want to break all the links to the pages, and rewrite all the manual links.

Although: the RSS feed for the greek site https://newsthatmoves.org/el/feed/ has different permalink structure and the feed shows up

Is there a way to work around this without changing permalink settings? possibly moving the rss feed to a different url?
