Thanks. Dumb error on my part. Apparently at some point I accidentally uploaded the .htaccess meant to restrict access to the wp-admin directory to the wp-content directory. Your listing pointed me to the right place. Thanks again.

I resolved the problem myself. I had set the home page custom permalink to index.htm. When I removed this and left the field empty, it worked.
