Thank you Esmi. Though this now leads to an interesting further problem because that’s not how links are being entered into the blog posts when we edit them for corrections. I’ll look into this further on my end then.
I can’t really do most of what you suggest due to the nature of the issue. If you read the entirety of the problem you would see why. This isn’t an issue of people linking to the wrong place. Those problems I find and take care of regularly when needed. This issue here is that the incorrect links crawled don’t actually exist in the first place and are found by Google on a page that doesn’t have the originating correct links the incorrect ones are based off of to begin with. Having to go back to redirect every incorrect link found for multiple blogs that isn’t actually on the page it is apparently crawled from would be a big chunk of maintenance work to give to the web team guys at my job. The best I can figure is that this issue is created by something associated with WordPress as Google doesn’t do this for the other thousands of pages on our sites.
