In reply to: [Gutenberg] Classic is SimplerI really hate the new editor. Thanks for the tip that I can find a plug-in to return to the classic editor. Like mentioned in this thread, I am an old-school coder and am much, much more comfortable with the “classic” editor. Those who decide to make these changes without warning or preview deserve lumps of coal in their Christmas stockings.

In reply to: Remove website url option from commentskeesiemeijer, thank you very much for working patiently with me. I did not realize that there were two functions.php files in different places.
Yes, you were correct in assessing that I had not made the code change that popper suggested in the right place.
I added popper’s code to the functions.php file in the wp-content/themes/twentyeleven folder, and it is working.
I will learn more about creating a child theme so that I don’t have to go through this again and again when WordPress is updated.
Thank you very much. Lessons learned for this old hobbiest who is not a programmer.

In reply to: Remove website url option from commentskeesiemeijer, thanks for trying. When I did exactly what you suggested, inserting the code from popper right after the <?php tag, it caused the whole blog to crash again.
This is the error message:
Fatal error: Call to undefined function add_filter() in /..path../wp-includes/functions.php on line 2I had to restore my old functions.php file from a backup to get the blog working again.
Any other ideas?

In reply to: Remove website url option from commentsCr00zng: thanks for trying. I installed SpamGone plugin, but found that it failed me. It will not allow me to reply to comments posted by others. I tried replying to a comment today, and got the error that a website URL is not permitted. I didn’t even enter one.
I deactivated the plugin since it won’t let me reply to comments.
I am very disappointed that WordPress won’t allow editing out the website URL from the comments code like it used to.
What else can I do since SpamGone doesn’t work for me?

In reply to: Remove website url option from commentspopper, thanks for the suggestion. You did not advise where to insert this code in the functions.php file. I tried inserting it at the end, and when I did, it caused my whole blog to crash. Fortunately, I kept a backup of the old functions.php file so I got the blog working again.
Any other ideas? I can’t believe I am the only one who has this issue — not wanting the ability for a commenter to have a URL (“website”) field. It used to be an easy fix with removing/commenting out one line of code in the comments.php file, but with the “improvement” with WP, that doesn’t work any more, either.
I’m still stumped. More advice with very specific suggestions on what to change and exactly where would be appreciated very much.

In reply to: Images will not displayOkay, I understand. Actually, I developed my .htaccess file for my main website so long ago that I didn’t realize that what you called “anti-hotlinking” is just what I did — to try to prevent bandwidth theft and also to avoid having my photos show up on other websites. I know the crafty person can do that, but the typical novice got blocked.
I’ll look again at my .htaccess account and remove those anti-hotlink codes. I did it five years ago when I had another host that limited my bandwidth (or charged extra if I went over the monthly allowance.) This isn’t an issue any more since I switched to hostgator, which has no specific limits on bandwidth per month.
Thanks very much!

In reply to: Images will not displayEsmi, I’m sorry, I don’t know what anti-hotlinking is. Is that a WordPress matter or a web host matter, and if it is not done, should I have it done? Is this something I can do or ask the web host to do? Sorry, this is beyond my current scope of knowledge as a hobbyist.

In reply to: Images will not displayOh, sorry. Esmi, you have been so helpful, I am more than happy to share.
My web host added these lines to my primary domain’s .htaccess file:
SetEnvIfNoCase Referer “^http://bootedmanblog.com/” locally_linked=1
SetEnvIfNoCase Referer “^http://bootedmanblog.com$” locally_linked=1
SetEnvIfNoCase Referer “^http://www.bootedmanblog.com/” locally_linked=1
SetEnvIfNoCase Referer “^http://www.bootedmanblog.com$” locally_linked=1To be clear, my blog is on a subdomain that is under my main domain. The change to the .htaccess file was for the file on my main domain, not the subdomain where the blog is.

In reply to: Images will not displayUpdate: my web host, Hostgator, inserted some additional code in my .htaccess file that now makes images appear when using I.E. to look at the blog, but not Firefox. I am working with them to resolve that issue. It turned out to be a situation that the web host can help me with, and not something with WordPress, albeit confusing. Thanks again. I will close this thread, as I consider it resolved. Thank you for your help!

In reply to: Images will not displayesmi: thank you for continuing to work with me.
I switched to the default permalink structure.
Renaming the current WordPress .htaccess file? To what? I tried deleting it completely, then reloading … still doesn’t work.
I put it back in, reloaded, still doesn’t work.
I even re-wrote the first blog post and re-inserted an image for it. The post shows, but no image, even though the image appears in the folder when I FTP and look at it.
I am at a complete loss for what to do next, but am open to any more suggestions. Thank you.

In reply to: Images will not displayEsmi, I sincerely appreciate how hard you are trying to help me.
I FTP’d to the site and can see the image name BHDMusewp14.jpg in the exact location that you say it is in. It’s there! However, like you, when I click on the link directly, I wind up on the error page.
Further, I uploaded an image for my first WordPress blog post
http://www.bootedmanblog.com/2012/04/23/soft-launch-of-new-blog/and can see that image in the same folder. However, it won’t display, either.
I have no idea what’s wrong. The only possible reason why this is happening is that I have the domain for the blog hosted as a subdomain for a website. Perhaps that is the problem, and I need to contact the web host for answers about that.
I am giving up for the night… try again tomorrow, and if my web host can’t help me, and despite as hard as you have tried, I may just abandon WordPress and go back to Blogger. At least that was working, despite the awful new GUI that Google foisted on me.

In reply to: Images will not displayI checked via my FTP client. I logged on, navigated to the images folder, opened it, and counted. The images are there, but do not display.
I am independently asking my web host if they are having server issues, as well.

In reply to: Images will not displayesmi, thank you for your diligent follow-ups. Yes, as mentioned in my original post, the image that I want to have shown as a header appears exactly in the folder that you specified. In fact, it appears 14 times, which is how many times I have tried to upload it today. The system seems to change its file name with image sizes of crops that it is making all by itself (without showing me those changes) — but they are ALL there! Weird, huh? It won’t display a one of ’em!

In reply to: Images will not displayesmi: my upload path in Settings->Media is blank.

In reply to: Images will not displaybtw… now that I have re-uploaded the header image, all I see is a huge box with a red “X” in the upper left. It appears this way on both IE and Firefox. That’s why I took it down before, because it apparently is reserving space for something. Perhaps it is a problem with my web hosting service. I have been concerned about the host’s server being very slow. Could that be it? The image is being called but not displayed because the server is too slow to bring it up, even though the file size is only 110kb?
