I tried to add your script, but I got an error about using $this (Fatal error: Uncaught Error: Using $this when not in object context).
Then I tried using $trigger, I get no error – but no mails are send.
What do you think I do wrong?
Notice that my code only adding merge tags to your existing Trigger “user_registered”.
