Thanks for the advice … here are the outcomes:
1. Click ‘remake files’ ==> Could not remake files (2)
2. Click ‘remake thumbnails’ ==> Could not remake thumbnails ==> Reloading…
3. Imported the same image (322kb) on both sites. It works on the staging site and not on the luve site
4. Can’t access server memory as using a 1&1 Hosting solution. Although before trying 1-2 above I did remove redundant subdomains and files from the account to see if this would help.
5. I tried uninstalling and reinstalling the WPPA plugin and this made no change

Finally, I created another clone site and looked at the database for clues. I found the table wppa_photos had negative numbers (-7503) for the field id. I changed this to a positive number and went to Manage Photos and the image was displayed and seen. I imported a new image and this did not display … the id had been set to -7802. How can I reset the id counter top be positive?
