Ok… got that figured out… now How do I copy the files and folders onto my C-Drive so I can upload them once I get the new hosting set up?

I do change my permalinks here and there. Sometimes, I just take the default (which I set to just the name of the post/page). To my embarrassment, I got mad and just deleted the .htaccess file. I honestly don’t even know what it’s for. I was hoping to find a standard issue file and upload it to see if it helps.

My site: brettcohrs.com. Homepage works, but click on a post and it gives an ‘oops’ message.

The problem there is that I can’t access my admin area. When I go to login, I get this error:

    Internal Server Error

The server encountered an internal error or misconfiguration and was unable to complete your request.

Please contact the server administrator and inform them of the time the error occurred, and anything you might have done that may have caused the error.

More information about this error may be available in the server error log.

Thank you guys. I’ll check that codex link and follow directions. If I have a clear checklist, I’m good I think.

I think I get stumped on how to change them in the wp-config.php. I tried to open the file in my ftp client to see where I could edit that file. If I find it, there will be a place where I can change the username and password to my new host information?

When I followed the basic ‘restoring your database from backup’ instructions, I got the following error:

    Error
    SQL query:

    — Database: brett924_simply

    CREATE DATABASE brett924_simply DEFAULT CHARACTER SET utf8 COLLATE utf8_unicode_ci;

I think I see. I’ll give it a shot and post if sirens go off.

yes: set up hosting at Bluehost for aaronandandrew.org.
Since it’s unlimited domains, I was going to move an old semi-dead blogger blog over: salesexperiment.com. (I also have two other WP blogs to move over from other hosting to save a few dollars a month).

Do these instructions apply to both a WP migration and a Blogger migration?

It seems like I can just log into my cpanel w/ my bluehost username/pw. I set up the account for one url–I’ve set up wordpress on it. Now I have the second–the blogger account–that I’m wanting to pull in.

I think I got lost in the ‘work on your host with IP address’. I was thinking you meant that I could just set up a database without a url and make sure the old content was copied on there and then after I know all is well, pull over the domain name.

I’ll figure it out! Luckily the old content kind of sucks anyway. 🙂

So i can set up the new database on my new host, then associate the new DNS with that database after I got everything up and running? I can even upload WP to that new database prior to the domain name add? I can do this with the WP blogs I have to migrate also?

After my post, I did the standard FTP thing w/ Cyberduck and all of that.

What I’m excited about is that I think I followed what you are saying above–or at least enough to know where to go and look and follow step by step.

I do have 2 or 3 other blogs that I’m moving over to Bluehost. I’ll try following your instructions above on one of my other ones (of course they have their own problems: one is a blogger migration, one is currently hosted at Hostgator and one is at Godaddy. I hear moving WordPress from one hosting to another is more complicated than the blogger migration.

    Thanks GP!

So if I’m reading right, export blog in blogger (this will download a copy to my computer). Then transfer the domain to my new hosting, set up WP, then upload the exported blogger info. Does that sum it up?

Oh yeah–please just send me to an article if one is out there… Im always nervous about asking dumb questions in these forums!
